Blueberries

Blueberries have been getting a lot of press lately, as researchers reveal more data to confirm their known and purported health benefits. Blueberries are native to North America, where they grew in the woods and mountainous areas of the United States and Canada. They were not cultivated until the beginning of the 20th century, and made available commercially in 1916. Their rich color is significant, as research has suggested that the antioxidant level increases as the fruit ripens.

Blueberries are high in antioxidants, and are considered to be helpful in neutralizing free radical damage to cells and tissues. Research is showing blueberries may have wide ranging health supportive effects such as protecting the brain from oxidative stress and thereby helping to reduce the effects of aging as it pertains to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, lowering cholesterol, and protecting against colon cancer. One of the phytonutrients they contain, a flavonoid called kaempferol, may help reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. They are a good source of vitamin C, soluble and insoluble fiber, and vitamin E. At approximately 80 calories per cup, they are a great low calorie snack on their own or added to cereal, yoghurt, or in baked goods.
